I think all of you already know about that you have to link your mobile number with your Aadhaar card to enjoy continued service from all the telecom operators. Now, in a recent report, it is said that all the sim cards which will not be linked with Aadhaar card after February 2018, will be deactivated forever and users will not be able to use that sim card anymore.
I can still remember those days when I got my first sim card. Then, the process of getting a new sim card was very time consuming. We used to gave all the documents, two copies of passport size photographs to the retailer and then wait for 3-4 days to get the sim card activated. Then we used to verify our documents over a call to the customer care executive. After that, finally we got our sim cards working.
At that time, many of you may also noticed that some of the retailers were selling sim cards without taking any documents which is fully illegal. They used to submit one’s documents to activate multiple sim cards without owner’s permission and then sell those activated sim cards without any documents in a high price.
Now, things have changed over time and the process of getting a new sim card became very easy and less time consuming. Now, you just have to take your Aadhaar card number, give your fingerprint and that’s it. Sim card gets activated within seconds after bio-metric verification. The new process also solved the problem of the re-use of document by retailers without owner’s permission.
But there are still many sim cards which have been activated with anyone else’s documents. Terrorists, criminals and fraudsters are using these numbers to get bank account details of people, cyber attacks and other criminal activities. So, on February this year, Indian Government made it mandatory to link Aadhaar card with mobile numbers to make the sim cards active. After that Supreme Court passed an order and created a deadline, after which all the Aadhaar unlinked mobile numbers will be deactivated permanently. The deadline date is 6th February 2018.
